Treatments for Toenail Fungus - What You Need to Know

Toenail fungus infection is characterized by thickening and hardening of the nails, making it brittle and discolored. Medically called onychomycosis, nail (specifically, toe nail) fungus is typically caused by Trichophyton rubrum, Candida species, and occasionally, some species of molds. Onychomycosis often starts as a yellow or white area on the tip of the toenail or fingernail. Initially, a toenail fungal infection may not bother the patient much but as the infection progresses, the infected toenails become chipped and easily break, creating small cuts and breaks on the skin underneath. These cuts and breaks cause pain and may give off a foul odor if left untreated, and the toenails "die" and fall off. Like all infections caused by fungus, toenail fungal infections can be recurrent and become chronic. Antimycotic (antifungal) topical ointments or creams are commonly used to treat them, but since these commercial antifungal treatments can cost a lot, many toenail fungal infection sufferers resort to more affordable natural remedies. Here are some popular natural treatments for toenail fungal infections:

1. Vinegar soak. Fill a basin (or bucket) with equal amount of water and apple cider vinegar. Submerge your feet in the basin for 15 to 30 minutes and dry your toenails after. Repeat this about 2 to 3 times a day. If the smell of vinegar doesn't appeal to you, you can also use 3% hydrogen peroxide instead. Of note, some prefer using concentrated vinegar (not mixed with water), applying the vinegar on the toenail, and under the toenail (if the nail can be lifted a bit) using a dropper as many times a day as possible.

2. Use essential oils. Tea tree oil is popular for its antifungal properties. Use this alone or combined with an equal amount of lavender oil. Soak a cotton ball in the oil and rub this on the toenail about twice a day- after showering in the morning and before bedtime. You can also use a combination of olive oil and oregano oil and use it in the same manner.

3. Turmeric. Mix some water with turmeric powder to make a paste and apply this on the toenails. Allow the paste to dry, rinse off and properly dry your feet.

4. Lime juice. Soak the toes in concentrated lime juice or soak a cotton ball and rub it on the toes at least thrice a day.

5. Garlic is one of the best known natural antifungals. Crush raw garlic gloves and apply it on the toenails. You can also dust your feet, toenails, or shoes and socks with garlic powder.

There are many other home remedies for toenail fungal infections, with some "not so natural" ones like Listerine Mouthwash soaks and Vicks Vapor Rub application. You can use one or a combination of these treatments or use one of these alongside the treatments prescribed by your doctor. These natural home remedies may work for one and not for another. Treating fungi is difficult as fungus is very stubborn. Areas that are constantly moist are prone to fungal infections, so keeping the feet and toenails clean and dry helps protect you from these. Eating a well-balanced diet plus taking probiotic supplements like acidophilus, maintaining good hygiene, and drinking lots of water can help you avoid fungal infection in general.
